What to wear for your session – Couple outfit ideas

You have your couples portrait session scheduled for the next weekend and it’s finally time to decide what to wear for your session! For the most part, this depends on your individual style, here are some tips to help you out!

You want to choose something that compliments your features, shows your individuality and something that makes you feel amazing!

Dress up!

Dressing up is so fun. It gives you a celebratory feeling.

Show your style

I think dressing like yourself is a great way to feel comfortable. Pick something that shows your true style. Think of going on a trip together, or a date night! What would you wear?

A usual winner for women are dresses, and for men a coordinated casual look, jeans and a plaid, or subtle print looks awesome.

You can also choose a style goes with the season, fresh and colorful in the summer, sweaters and neutral colors for the fall.

Accessories are awesome to incorporate, hats, bracelets, earrings. Don’t forget about men shoes. Dress shoes for men (comfortable ones) are always a great choice.

Comfort is first

Whatever you decide to wear, just make sure you are comfortable so that you can relax and have fun during your session. Forget about the tight pants that don’t let you breathe! Wear something comfortable that lets you walk, jump and hug!

In any setting, I like to make sure we explore our surroundings rather than sticking to one setting. We keep moving , walking and running!

Leave purses, combs, phones, clothes hangers and other things in the car and wear comfortable shoes!

Consider the seasons

An important thing to consider when planning and thinking of your photos is if you would like to go with the season style. Many couple opt for sweaters for fall, and comfy pants!

Leave stuff behind

If possible don’t bring your purse, or bags, or hangers! Same goes for Props. Leave them in the car . These things tend to get in the way of spontaneous moments 🙂 I will carry anything you absolutely need to have.

Lean towards Neutral Colors

Most of the time I will lean towards neutral colors . Depending on the location, lighter colors contrast nicely in natural surroundings!  Solid white tends to get blown out very easily in pictures, so you are better with an OFF-white.

Primary colors are a great choice to add when you are shooting in the city. A touch of red, yellow, or blue can make anything pop and help you stand out from the background. Adding a pair of red shoes, or a bright blue sweater will transform your outfits.

Pick rich, fun colors to liven up the photo and add color to your face. They add depth and color to your picture.

Black is another color that is hard. Details can get lost in clothing when it comes to black.

Dots , squares or some fun patterns can be fun to play around.

Don’t be scared of some fun pop!

Combine

Coordinating  is a great way to look better together in photos , without matching!

Choose colors in the same family, and try to include an additional color. You can choose blue and yellow for example, or brown and orange and work around that.

It is more visually interesting if you choose one or two colors as a theme and have the other person wear something that goes with the theme

Add some details

Show your personality through your clothes and accessories !

Choose an accent color and add that color into your shoes, jewelry, undershirts, scarf or tights!

Layers

Layers are a great way to add texture and look great in a photo. By adding a blazer or fun scarf, not only does it make the picture look more complete, you can drop the layers toward the end of the shoot for a completely different look. They are also great to do a semi outfit change. Take something off or add something to create a subtle change.

Things to Avoid:

  • Avoid: big logos on t-shirts
  • Avoid green if we are going to shoot in a park or in the nature, or gray, grunge colors if we are going to shoot in an urban location.
  • Avoid sunglasses
  • Avoid crazy patterns
  • Avoid tight clothes
