About Bavaria Downs and the Edward Anne Estate

The property is huge, tucked into the rolling hills in Chaska, and somehow feels both grand and welcoming at the same time. The woodwork, staircases, fireplaces, giant windows, all of it has so much character without feeling stuffy or overly formal.

One thing that can get a little confusing for couples researching the venue is the naming.

Originally, Bavaria Downs referred only to the original mansion property, which is now officially called the Edward Anne Estate. That was the first venue on the property, so for years photographers, planners, and couples all simply called it “Bavaria Downs.”

Since then, the property has expanded and now also includes Equestria West and Woodland Glasshaus. Together, all three venues now fall under the Bavaria Downs name.

But honestly, a lot of us in the wedding industry still casually refer to the Edward Anne Estate itself as “Bavaria Downs” because that’s what the original venue was known as for so long.

And visually, it’s kind of a dream for photos.

Getting Married at Edward Anne Estate

There are venues that look pretty online, and then there are venues that actually feel good to spend an entire day in. Bavaria Downs definitely falls into the second category.

The property flows really well, which truly makes a bigger difference on a wedding day than people realize. Getting ready, ceremony, cocktail hour, portraits, reception, nothing feels disconnected or rushed.

There are so many little pockets throughout the venue that naturally create moments. Guests wandering the gardens during cocktail hour, couples sneaking away to the hills for sunset photos, people gathering around the fireplaces once the reception starts, it all feels very natural and lived in.

The venue also changes a lot depending on the season, which is part of why I love photographing there so much. Summer feels lush and green, fall weddings get insanely pretty with the changing trees, and winter weddings inside the mansion feel cozy in the best way.

Why Couples Love the Edward Anne Estate at Bavaria Downs

I think couples are drawn to Bavaria Downs because it feels impressive without feeling cold.

A lot of larger venues can feel overly formal or almost hotel-like once guests arrive, but Bavaria Downs still feels personal. The historic estate keeps everything grounded and warm even when the wedding itself is really elevated.

Couples also love that there are so many options throughout the property:

  • outdoor ceremonies
  • indoor ceremony backups that still photograph beautifully
  • multiple reception spaces
  • quiet areas for portraits
  • big open spaces for guests to explore

It’s the kind of venue where guests actually remember the setting afterward.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at the Edward Anne Estate

Photographically, Bavaria Downs gives you so much variety without ever needing to leave the property.

The gardens, the hills, the mansion exterior, the staircases, the fireplaces, the reception rooms, there’s always somewhere beautiful nearby without needing to overcomplicate the timeline.

And honestly, the light here is really nice throughout the day. Even inside the estate, the windows keep things feeling soft and natural instead of dark or heavy.

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings here is that the venue supports both candid moments and more editorial portraits really naturally. You can create something dramatic and polished one second, then immediately photograph a quiet in-between moment that feels emotional and real.

It never feels overly staged here, which I really love.

Wedding Preparation at the Countryside Suite

The Countryside Suite at Edward Anne Estate is bright, spacious, and honestly just a really nice place to spend the morning getting ready.

There’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out without things feeling chaotic, and the natural light throughout the space photographs beautifully. It works especially well for those quieter moments before the ceremony, whether that’s getting ready with your people, emotional first looks, or just taking a breath before the day really begins.

Having a comfortable getting ready space changes the energy of the entire morning more than people realize.

Ceremony Locations at Bavaria Downs

The outdoor ceremony spaces are probably what most people picture first when they think of Bavaria Downs.

The gardens and rolling hills make everything feel really peaceful and tucked away from the city. The gazebo area especially becomes incredibly pretty once florals are added.

And honestly, one thing Bavaria Downs does really well is indoor ceremony backups. Minnesota weather can obviously do whatever it wants, but the indoor options here still feel intentional and beautiful instead of feeling like Plan B.

That matters a lot more than couples think it will.

Reception Spaces at Bavaria Downs

The reception spaces at Bavaria Downs feel classic without feeling outdated.

The Grand Ballroom has these tall ceilings and chandeliers that give the room a really dramatic feeling once guests fill the space, but it still feels warm instead of overly formal.

The Garden Room feels a little softer and more connected to the outside scenery, especially during spring and summer weddings.

And the tented receptions outside are honestly so fun. Once the sun starts setting over the property and everything lights up at night, the whole venue feels kind of magical.

The Garden Room

The Garden Room accommodates up to 250 guests and features beautiful views overlooking the gardens.

It feels elegant, warm, and connected to the surrounding landscape.

The Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom is larger and more formal, accommodating up to 450 guests.

The soaring ceilings and crystal chandeliers create a classic luxury wedding atmosphere while still feeling inviting.

Outdoor Tent Reception

For couples wanting to fully embrace the outdoor setting, the tented reception space is such a beautiful option.

The surrounding landscape creates an incredible atmosphere, especially during sunset and evening receptions.

Photo Opportunities Throughout the Property

The property is big enough that your gallery naturally ends up with a lot of variety without needing to leave the venue or force anything. You can go from elegant mansion portraits to open rolling hills in just a few minutes, which keeps everything feeling dynamic but still cohesive.

Some of my favorite areas for photos are:

  • the front of the mansion
  • the gardens and fountain areas
  • the grand staircase
  • the fireplace rooms
  • the patios and courtyards
  • the hills around sunset

The venue also photographs beautifully in different weather and seasons. Summer feels lush and green, fall gets really cinematic with the changing trees, and winter weddings inside the estate feel cozy in a way that still feels elegant.

And honestly, Bavaria Downs is one of those venues where even just walking between spaces usually turns into a photo opportunity. The property has so much texture and character that a lot of the best moments happen naturally in-between things.

Final Thoughts on Bavaria Downs

Bavaria Downs is one of those venues that really gives couples a full experience instead of just a pretty reception room.

There’s space to slow down a little, guests naturally spread out and enjoy the property, and the entire venue feels designed for people to actually experience the day instead of just move through it.

As a Minnesota wedding photographer, it’s honestly one of my favorite venues for couples who want their wedding to feel elegant, emotional, and a little transportive without losing warmth or personality.
