Right in the heart of Minneapolis, Semple Mansion is one of those venues that immediately feels special.

Built in the late 1800s as a home for Frank and Anne Semple (and really, who doesn’t love a mansion built as a romantic gesture?), the property is filled with historic details, beautiful architecture, and rooms that each have their own personality.

From the grand staircase and foyer to the third-floor ballroom, there are so many beautiful spaces throughout the mansion. It feels elegant and historic without being overly formal, which makes it especially fun to photograph.

And because so much of the experience happens indoors, Semple Mansion is also a wonderful option for a Minnesota fall or winter wedding when you don’t necessarily want your entire wedding day depending on the weather.

One of my favorite things about the mansion is that the entire wedding day can unfold in different spaces while still feeling cohesive. Getting ready, portraits, ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can all have their own atmosphere without requiring guests to travel between locations.

The architecture also does a lot of the visual work for you. The staircase, fireplaces, woodwork, windows, and historic details create beautiful backdrops before you add a single flower.

For couples who love old-world architecture but still want the convenience of a Minneapolis wedding venue, Semple Mansion is such a lovely combination.

There’s a lot to love here, but I think the biggest thing is character.

Semple Mansion doesn’t feel like a blank ballroom where you have to create the entire atmosphere from scratch. The building already gives you one.

The mansion offers:

From a photography perspective, Semple Mansion gives us so much to work with without having to leave the property.

It gives us the ability to create photographs that feel a little editorial while still leaving plenty of space for the candid moments happening around you.

One of the advantages of getting married here is how many portrait locations are available within the mansion itself.

The Grand Staircase

Probably the most iconic photography spot at Semple Mansion. It works beautifully for wedding party portraits, couples portraits, and those slightly more editorial photographs where the architecture becomes part of the composition.

The Grand Foyer

The foyer gives us another classic mansion backdrop and works especially well for portraits when we want something elegant without leaving the ceremony area.

The Ballroom

Located on the third floor, the ballroom feels completely different from the smaller rooms downstairs. Its scale makes it wonderful for reception photographs, first dances, and wide images that capture the entire celebration.

The staircase, foyer, mansion rooms, windows, and ballroom give us plenty of variety indoors, so outdoor portraits can be something we choose to do rather than something we have to depend on.

Add winter florals, candlelight, warm textures, and the historic architecture and the entire mansion can feel incredibly romantic.
