Why I love photographing Weddings at the Catalyst

From a photography perspective there are tons of outdoor AND indoor portrait opportunities. There is a cohesive aestethic all around with a the neutral color palette throughout the property and bright interior spaces with ample light!

The property is larger than you think, and light changes quickly near the lake. If you’re planning your wedding timeline, I strongly recommend carving out intentional sunset time. Even 15–20 minutes makes a difference here. And as always, build in breathing room. This is not a venue you want to rush through. The magic is in wandering a little!

Lighting Notes

  • Lots of the property is backlit when facing the water — magical at sunset, harsh midday.
  • There is some open shade next to the venue during much of the day.
  • Indoor spaces are bright and neutral, which photograph beautifully.

The pine trees

The pine trees are easily the most loved photo feature on the property — simple, timeless, and perfectly placed right in front of the lake. A clean, natural backdrop that never distracts and always feels romantic, especially at sunset when the light glows over the water. For midday portraits, you can move slightly closer toward the ceremony area where there’s more open shade and softer light. It’s one of those rare spots that works beautifully all day — you just have to know how to use it.

Ceremony Spaces

Catalyst offers both outdoor and indoor ceremony options, giving couples flexibility! The outdoor ceremony space is nestled among tall pine trees overlooking the lake, creating a peaceful, distinctly Minnesotan setting that feels intimate and intentional. If weather shifts, Pineview Hall provides a bright indoor option with oversized windows facing the water and a stunning fireplace that adds warmth and character.

Getting Ready Spaces

There are two spacious, luxurious getting-ready suites that are bright, neutral, and genuinely comfortable to spend time in. They’re large enough for everyone to spread out, including a kitchenette to have snacks! A good getting ready space makes the morning feel calm instead of chaotic — and they photograph beautifully. There’s also a dedicated vendor lounge, which might not sound glamorous, but it makes a huge difference in keeping the day organized and flowing smoothly.

Patio

The lakeside patio is perfect for cocktail hour. It flows seamlessly from the indoor spaces and connects to the indoor-outdoor bar, making it easy for guests to grab a drink and mingle. The atmosphere feels like an intimate party — people chatting in small groups, kids playing along the lakeside rocks, friends taking selfies with the water behind them. With the breeze off the lake and pine trees surrounding the space, it feels relaxed, joyful, and effortlessly elevated.

Lakeview Hall Reception Space

Lakeview Hall is a separate reception space that allows for early setup and smooth transitions throughout the day. Large windows frame the lake views, keeping the space bright and connected to the outdoors. Once the evening begins, it feels elevated yet cozy — refined but welcoming — and it’s very clearly set up for dancing. The layout naturally centers the celebration around the dance floor, making it easy for guests to gather, celebrate, and stay engaged all night.

Things to Know Before You Book

  • It truly feels like a destination wedding. Consider how that impacts guest travel and lodging.
  • Guests can stay onsite, which is amazing — but confirm how accommodations are reserved and managed.
  • The property is spacious. Build in walking time when planning your timeline.
  • The venue has exclusive catering with 3CheersCatering and beverage with Liquid Motion, however food trucks and carts can be brought in
  • Pets are allowed!
  • The outdoor ceremony location overlooking the lake is the clear favorite. The water backdrop and surrounding trees make it feel private, peaceful, and distinctly Minnesotan.
  • It’s especially beautiful in summer and fall.
  • If weather doesn’t cooperate, there are strong indoor alternatives
  • Both maintain the clean, neutral aesthetic, so your design doesn’t feel compromised.
