Planning for Fall Engagement Photos in Minnesota

Minnesota’s fall is truly a stunning time for engagement photos, with the vibrant foliage and crisp air all around. In order to plan your engagement photos in the Minnesotan fall, here’s a guide to the best tips for capturing the magic of the season!

Timing is key. Schedule your fall engagement photos one hour and fifteen minutes before sunset for the best light. We also take some photos after the sun goes down, and it is so perfect!

Have a plan for rain. October is a transition month, which makes it very rainy! Have a backup date in the calendar in case of rain or thunderstorms.

Choose a location that has open space, but also feels intimate. The coppery fall colors in the ground reflect the sun as it started to set!

While a good location is important, shooting around the best time is key! We schedule our shoots always around the sunset time, when there is a chance sun will get low in the sky.  While a golden sunset like this is not always something we can plan on, we had a wonderful sunset with crisp yellow shining all over us.

Choose one of Minnesota’s picturesque lakeshores as your backdrop! The still waters reflect the autumn colors, creating a beautiful settingfor your engagement photos. As you walk hand in hand or cuddle along the short, the golden hour light will enhance the warmth in your images.

Minnesota’s Twin cities are filled with not just lakes but trees! All the trees changing in the parks and sidewalks transform the urban landscape into fall wonderlands. You can pick a city park with a mix of autumn foliage and some city views as well! The vibrant skies with pops of colors will be gorgeous for your engagement photos.

Fall brings a chill to the air, and it’s so wonderful to start to feel cozy!

When thinking what to wear, I recommend to embrace the season’s vibe adding sweaters, textures and fun warm colors. Don’t be afraid to add some elegance with scarves and boots too!

The air is very nippy in October, even when standing in full sun. When figuring out your outfits and choosing what to wear specifically for fall, think of how you will “fit” into the mostly golden setting.
